چکیده

The reported incidence of hyperkalaemia in hospitalisedpatients is between 1 and 10%. I Thevast majority of cases are related to patients prescribed angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE) or angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) in conjunction with spironolactone with pre-existing or new renal failure. Most other cases are related to potassium supplementation and prescription of diuretic/drugs with potassium-sparing properties.2 It is the most serious ofall electrolyte abnormalities as symptoms can be non-specific or absent, even in severe hyperkalaemia, before causing cardiac arrest.

Dietary Approach to Recurrent or Chronic Hyperkalaemia in Patients with Decreased Kidney Function

Whereas the adequate intake of potassium is relatively high in healthy adults, i.e., 4.7 g per day, a dietary potassium restriction of usually less than 3 g per day is recommended in the management of patients with reduced kidney function, especially those who tend to develop hyperkalaemia including patients who are treated with angiotensin pathway modulators. Most potassium-rich foods are cons...

Management of hyperkalaemia.

Hyperkalaemia, an elevated extracellular fluid potassium concentration, is a common electrolyte disorder and is present in 1-10% of hospitalised patients. Elevated serum potassium concentrations are usually asymptomatic but may be associated with electrocardiogram (ECG) changes. Hyperkalaemia occasionally leads to life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. Prompt recognition of this disorder, patien...

Effect of age and affection status on blood pressure, serum potassium and stature in familial hyperkalaemia and hypertension.

BACKGROUND The rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder familial hyperkalemia and hypertension which is caused by mutations in WNK4 kinase, is characterized by childhood hyperkalemia and hypercalciuria, and appearance of hypertension in the third to fourth decade. Accompanying short stature is often described. METHODS We determined height, blood pressure and blood and urinary biochemical para...

The management of hyperkalaemia in the emergency department.

Life threatening hyperkalaemia (> 7.0 mmol/l) is commonly associated with acute renal failure. Moderate hyperkalaemia (6.1-6.9 mmol/l) is also common and well tolerated in patients with chronic renal failure. Renal failure is the most common cause of hyperkalaemia although other causes to consider include drugs (potassium sparing diuretics, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors), hyperglycae...

Hypokalaemia and hyperkalaemia.

Disturbances in potassium homoeostasis presenting as low or high serum potassium are common, especially among hospitalised patients. Given the fact that untreated hypokalaemia or hyperkalaemia is associated with high morbidity and mortality, it is critical to recognise and treat these disorders promptly. In this article, normal potassium homoeostasis is reviewed initially and then a pathophysio...
